1. They can be a sign of iron deficiency- If you emerge with blue, red and black marks on your body after every intimate session you have with your partner then don’t blame it on your partner. Getting hickeys too often mean that you have an acute iron deficiency which is causing them. Iron is an important component of blood and if you are deficient in iron your skin tends to bruise easily. Anaemia is another problem which occurs due to lack of iron in the body. Recurrence of hickeys is a sign that you need to upscale the intake of iron in your diet. Try to include green leafy vegetables in your diet and you can also take iron supplements after consulting your doctor.

2. Can cause a permanent scar- Most of the people think that a hickey is only going to last for a few days or weeks after which it will eventually get healed. But that is not always true. Sometimes the hickey may leave behind a nasty scar which stays with you forever. Though this depends on the depth of the scar as well as your complexion. The paler the complexion the more easily the hickey will form and will last much longer. Another thing that you must keep in mind is that you should never pick the bruise as it may damage the skin even more making the scar a permanent one.

3. You may contract oral herpes- If you already didn’t know then herpes is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. So if a person who is infected with oral herpes decides to give you a hickey the virus will get transferred to you and will get into the blood stream through the broken skin. Thus you should not have a sexual contact with a person who has herpes.

4. It may lead to blood clots- Though the chances of a hickey turning into a blood clot are very rare but there are still chances for it to happen. If the person who is giving you the hickey bites you too deep, it may actually turn into a very serious medical problem. A hickey on the neck is very close to the spinal cord and the heart and thus may affect the central nervous as well as the circulatory system adversely. The only reported case of a death caused by a hickey was documented in New Zealand in the year 2011 where her hickey turned into a blood clot due to which she suffered a heart attack and then died.

5. You cannot cure these- If you’ve got a hickey you have to wait it out in order to get it cured. Other than that there is no way you can treat a hickey. Though you can try out various supposed cures to calm down the swelling or provide you some temporary relief from the itching, etc. But other than that there is no permanent cure to get rid of a hickey quickly.
