She was born on 18th August 1959 in Madurai. She belongs from a common family. Her father, Narayanan Sitharaman had a job in railways while her mother, Savitri was a housewife. She spent her childhood in various parts of Tamil Nadu because of frequent transfers of her father.

Nirmala Sitharaman graduated from Seethalakshmi Ramasamy College, Tiruchirappalli, and then she joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi and completed her Masters in Economics.

She got married to Parakala Prabhakar and then moved to London. There is worked as a Senior Manager for Pricewaterhouse Cooper. Her husband is also known as the alumnus of London School of Economics and Jawaharlal Nehru University. The couple has a daughter.

Sitharaman became the member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) in the year 2003. According to the reports, she was the member of NCW until 2005. And after a year she joined Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP).
5. Political journey

Sitharaman climbed the political ladder very quickly after joining BJP in 2006 and in the year 2010 she became the spokesperson of BJP.
