How to Make Dal Fry at Home

If you like Punjabi cuisine, then you can add some Punjabi Tadka to your regular Dal. Dal Fry is a Punjabi dish which uses a blend of 4 types of dal viz. Toor, Chana, Moong and Masoor. You can also use plain Toor Dal for making Dal Fry. The plain cooker cooked rice is sautéed in indian spices and pure ghee. You can serve it with jeera rice or plain roti.

Ingredients:

  • 4 parts Toor dal
  • 3 parts Chana dal
  • 3 parts Moong dal
  • 3 parts Masoor dal
  • Water
  • Finely chopped tomato
  • Finely chopped onion
  • 4 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • ½ inch ginger, chopped
  • 2 green chillies
  • 2 tbsp. ghee
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 dry red chillies
  • 1/4th tsp Garam masala
  • 1/4th tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp. coriander leaves, chopped

How to Make Dal Fry?

  1.  Wash the dal in some water and soak it for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, transfer the dal to a pressure cooker.
  2.  Add some salt and water and pressure cook it on high flame. After 1 whistle, lower the flame and after 3 whistles, turn off the flame.
  3.  Let the pressure sit down for a while. Open the lid after the pressure is released. Do not stir or mash it.
  4.  Add some ghee in a pan or a wok. Add the cumin seeds, dried red chillies, cinnamon stick and cloves. When the cumin seeds are roasted, add the onions and sauté it over medium flame until it turns golden brown.
  5.  Add the chopped ginger and garlic. Add the green chillies. Cook it for few minutes.
  6.  Add the chopped tomatoes and cook them until they become soft. Add the Garam masala, coriander powder, red chilli powder and mix it properly. When the tomatoes are cooked and start leaving the sides, add the cooked dal to the wok. Mix the masala and the dal well. let it cook for a minute.
  7.  Add some lemon juice and some water. cook on medium flame for few minutes. Stir it occasionally.
  8.  Turn off the heat. Your Dal Fry is ready. Garnish it with coriander leaves.
  9.  Serve it with jeera rice or plain roti.
