1. Sakshi Malik
The date of 18th August, 2016 is written in golden in the hearts of all the Indians. Haryana’s daughter Sakshi Malik became the first Indian woman wrestler to secure a medal at Olympics. Her victory is symbolic of the rising status of women in the Indian society, especially in Haryana. She hails from a state where a woman in sports is considered not fit to be married. But Sakshi Malik defied all the odds and decided to chase her dream.

2. Karnam Malleswari
She is regarded as the ‘Sports Daughter of India. She played a vital role in putting the Indian women in the sports world map. She became the first Indian woman to bag an Olympic medal in 2000. She won a bronze medal in weightlifting in women’s 69 kg division. She gave a severe blow to the face of all those with the ancient mindset that women can’t do anything except cooking. She hails from a remote village in Andhra Pradesh where sports are just an unaffordable luxury. But she broke all the barriers and came out victoriously. She was trained under the mentorship of a Belarussian coach named Leonid Tarankohe.

3. Mary Kom
Her name doesn’t need introduction anymore. She is already a star. Her victory in the 2012 London Olympics broke the stereotype that a woman can’t be good at boxing. She competed against Nicola Adams of Britain and bagged a bronze medal in the women’s fly category. She is a five-time world champion in the 48 kg category. Though her dreams to bag a gold medal at the Rio Olympics shattered as she failed to qualify for it, but she continues to inspire many young Indian women.

4. Saina Nehwal
She is a popular face in Indian Sports. She became a household name at the very young age of 22. She was the first Indian badminton player to win a medal at Olympics. She bagged the bronze medal at 2012 London Olympics. She is calm and composed while playing which is a remarkable trait of this 26-year-old badminton player. She is the face of the Girl Child Campaign in India in India. She is the inspiration for many young Indian women to mark their name in the Sports World Map.

5. P.V. Sindhu
This 21-year old badminton player carved her name in the Indian sports history after winning a silver medal at Rio Olympics. She was competing against the world champion Carolina Marin, but she couldn’t secure the first place. But she won many hearts for her fabulous performance in Olympics. She was trained under the former badminton player Pullela Gopichand who is renowned for his coaching skills. She credited her fitness regime for her achievement at Rio Olympics. Her endurance and composure at the badminton court took the internet by storm.
