Today, on the 84th birthday of the 11th President of India, the “Missile Man”, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, almost the whole of India is celebrating this occasion in various ways.

1. P.M. Unveils Kalam’s Statue
Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi revealed the golden statue of late Dr. Kalam in DRDO Bhavan, New Delhi. Along with a statue, a photo exhibition was also inaugurated there which was titled, ‘A Celebration of Dr. Kalam’s Life.’ He also tweeted yesterday, “Glad to join Dr. Kalam’s birth anniversary celebrations, which includes the unveiling of his statue and photo exhibition.”

2. DRDO Missile Named after Dr. Kalam
Defense Minister, Manohar Parrikar will rename the very prestigious missile complex as “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex” today at Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad. Dr. Kalam worked with the missile complex for almost 20 years. The Missile Complex has an Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), Defense Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RCI) which were his brain child only.
Mr. Manohar Parrikar will also inaugurate two newly set up R&D facilities at Dundigal and Hyderabad today.
3. CBSE Pays Tribute To The ‘Rocket Man’
Dr. Kalam once quoted, “To succeed in your mission, you must have single minded devotion to your goal.” On his 84th birthday, CBSE going further with its ‘Expression Series’, they have decided to celebrate it in an innovative way. They have held an essay/poem/drawing competition for CBSE students across the country. They can write on any of the following 3 topics:

• ‘Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam: the father of India’s Missile Programme’ and
• ‘You have to dream before your dreams can come true.” said Dr. Kalam. I dream for India to be…’
The entries can be submitted not only in English, but all the Indian 22 scheduled languages. And to ease the process more, the students can submit their work through following 3 modes:

4. Maharashtra Declares ‘No School Bag Day’
Maharashtra government paid tribute to the most loved president of India, Dr. Kalam in their own way! They declared ‘No School Bag Day’ on this date for class 3rd to 6th students in the entire state, and also marked as ‘Book Reading Day’ today to encourage knowledge gaining and sharing for a better India.

5.‘Naalaya India’ Movement Launched in Chennai
Naalaya I.N.D.I.A. (Tomorrow’s India), is an NGO established by Suresh Babu to mark Dr. Kalam’s 84th Birthday today. Earlier, he launched an FB page ‘Kalam’s Kanavu’ (Kalam’s Dream), which to his surprise, had more than 25,000 followers. Then, he decided to form this movement which is laid on three virtues: Passion, Inspire and Spread. He told a press that, “Naalaya I.N.D.I.A will bring the youth of the nation together for one goal – Change. We firmly believe that we are the new generation, who can bring about a change in the world to make it a better place for us and the future. We, the part of the ‘new’, invite you to be the CHANGE.”
6. Thane Students Take Traffic Pledge
Students in Thane have made some interesting arrangements for this day. Around 1,00,000 boys and girls from different schools in Thane have gathered together and will take a pledge on awareness and educating about Traffic Safety. Not only students, the police department, Municipal Corporation, traffic cops has come together for this mega event. Not only this, they will also take up these activities:
Movie airing – ‘I am Kalaam’
Special assembly with talks on Dr. Kalam for 1st and 2nd standards
Essay writing on topics related to Dr. Kalam for grades 3 to 5
Group discussion on topics like ‘What Education Means to you?’ for grades 6 to 9
No Bag Day
All students will read books from their school Libraries for an hour after the morning assembly.
7.Bhubaneshwar : Sand Sculpture Of Dr. Kalam
Mr. Sudarshan Pattnaik, who is well known for his amazing sand art internationally, made a beautiful 5 foot high sand sculpture of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He used about 4 tons of sand to make this incredibly wonderful art, and wrote a message, “Tribute to Dr Abdul Kalam, 84th Birth Anniversary.”

Mr. Pattnaik said that, “He was the first president who had invited me to Rastrapati Bhawan in 2005 when sand art was not very popular in our country and encouraged me a lot through his inspiring words.”
