How to make: Healthy and Tasty Kala Chana Curry

Let’s learn how to make this simple and tasty festive dish.

Whenever we smell the Kala Chana cooking, we are reminded of our festivities. Our Hindu festival of Ashtami is said to be incomplete without Kala Chana. It is one of the three main Prasadam that is served on the occasion, the other two being Halwa and Puri. But today we are not going to make the Kala Chana is our regular way. We will add something new to it. This dish can be made dry to be eaten with roti or puri, or you can add gravy if you want to have it with rice. You can have it without any bread or rice, just sprinkle some chaat masala to make a tasty and fuller snack out of it.

Preparation for this recipe will take around 10 minutes while cooking will take another 30 minutes. The ingredients mentioned below will serve two people. You can adjust the quantity according to the servings required.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup black peas soaked overnight
  • 2 tbsp. of ghee or vegetable oil
  • Asafoetida
  • ½ tsp of cumin seeds
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 black cardamom
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 2 finely chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp. of ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • ½ tsp aamchoor
  • ½ Garam masala
  • Salt to taste

How to make Kala Chana Curry

1. Cook the soaked black peas in a cooker adding some salt and turmeric to it. Pressure cook it up till 4-5 whistles. Check whether the peas have become soft. Wait for the pressure in the cooker to release. Don’t force open the cooker.

2. Heat some oil or ghee in a pan on medium heat. When the oil is hot enough, add asafoetida, cumin seeds, cinnamon, bay leaf and black cardamom to the oil. Roast them while stirring continuously.

3. When the above-added ingredients are roasted properly, add chopped onions and ginger garlic paste. Sauté the onions till they become golden brown.

4. Add chopped tomatoes to it and sauté till they are cooked properly. Add rest of the spices now and cook it well. Keep stirring it until the mixture leaves the ghee.

5. Open the cooker with cooked Kala Chana. Add the boiled Chana to the mixture prepared above. Mix them well and simmer the heat for 5-10 minutes. Cook until you get the gravy of your desired consistency.

6. Garnish it with fresh coriander and serve it hot with rice/roti.
