Today I am going to share with all of you some interesting facts about our private part, i.e., vagina. I know generally women feels shy to discuss such topics but don’t worry as we are here to educate you and remain healthy without any embarrassments, we will be clearing out a lot of myths in this article. Although this is the most private part of our body, there are many facts that are unknown to many of you.

So, just check them up and become more aware and update about the sensitive organ:

  • Vagina means sheath, scabbard, or covering

Word vagina is originated from Latin word which means sheath, scabbard or covering. It is a female reproductive organ which connects the uterus to the outer environment. Vagina is a very complex and delicate organ which contains folds of rugae. Rugae are the transverse ridges that increases the surface area of the organ while having sex and childbirth.

The very first movie in which the word “vagina” was used was made by Disney in 1946. The movie showed the whole concept of menstruation but it was never released and was named as “The Story of Menstruation.”

  • Vagina never loosens after having frequent sex

Yes …this is true. Your lovemaking activities can never effect your vagina shape. Vagina is a very delicate organ having lots of nerve endings in it. Basically, female hormones are responsible for this type of activity of muscles. Hormones such as estrogen and oxytocin are responsible for muscular contraction and relaxation of the vaginal muscles. The hormone oxytocin is secreted from the pituitary gland via the blood stream or the endocrine system that results in vaginal relaxation. The secretion starts when you feel aroused. After having sex, the hormones stops the secretion of hormones that result in contraction of muscles and vagina retains its original size.

Child delivery can loosen the vagina somewhat. This is due to the fact that vagina increases its size by sixfold when having the delivery.

  • Vagina have a pH of 3.5 to 4

It is obvious that everything has pH but do you know your vagina is slightly acidic in nature? Yes… it is true….vagina have a range of 3.5 to 4.0 which indicates that it is less than neutral from the pH chart. The cause of acidic pH may be due to the various fluids that are released from the vagina. The acidic pH of vagina prevent the growth of bad bacteria and avoids infection. However, pH of vagina may change during the time of menstrual cycle, intercourse, hormonal changes and dietary fluctuations. Like if we talk about pH of vagina during menstruation then it is nearly 7.0 as blood have a pH of 7.4.

Change in vaginal pH may lead to some changes like odour and micro organismic growth. So, it is necessary to keep hygiene in mind.

  • Clitoris contains 8,000 nerve endings

Clitoris is the most sensitive zone of female private part. It contains about 8,000 nerve endings which affect another 15,000 nerves present in the pelvic region. The number of nerve endings in female is double as compared to men. During sexual arousals, the clitoris have stimulation which increases the sensations and affects other nerve endings and spread throughout the pelvic region. The clitoris and genitalia change the hue and act as erectile flesh which is filled with blood that leads to vaginal contractions.

  • Vagina can be of different shape and size

It is observed by various studies that vaginas have different size and shape. They are varied in size, length and diameter.

In a study, range of length of vagina is found to be 6.86 to 14.81 cm.

  • Vagina is stronger than you think

Vaginal muscles are so strong that it can lock down with penis. This is termed as penis captivus because it captives the penis during the intercourse so that penis will not be released out of the vagina before ejaculation. This happens rarely still a very interesting and unique feature of the vaginal muscles.

  • Vagina has premenopausal discharge

It is normal that your vagina has premenopausal discharge. Premenopausal discharge is the transparent white colored gel like liquid which is discharged every day by the vagina. The average amount of vaginal discharge in 8 hours is 155 gms. The discharge content may escalate before the ovulation period of menstrual cycle. The discharge may be more soggy and elastic during these intervals.

  • Vagina cleanses by itself

Yesss….vagina cleanses by itself. Various bacteria’s that lives in the vagina cleanses it and prevent from infection. But only the good bacteria are responsible for cleaning the vagina.

Lactobacilli helps in maintaining the pH balanced.

They also produce bacteriocins that prevents the entry of bad bacteria in the vagina.

They produce ingredients that helps them to stick to the walls of vagina and prevent from entering in the tissues.

  • Vagina and sharks have a little in common

A compound squalene is there which is present in both vagina and shark. It is a 30 carbon compound which is organic in nature. It is the biochemical precursor of all the steroids present in the body. It is found in human females as vaginal lubricant.

  • Vaginal hair is short

The vaginal hair grows slowly as compared to the hair present on our head. This may be due to the hormonal functionality on the body. The growth of pubic hair varies according to age. Like females between ages 18 and 24 have high growth of pubic hair while it decreases down with ageing.
