When talking about makeup, the foundation can be considered as one of the trickiest parts to get it right. It takes a lot of experience along with some trial and error to finally get it right. One thing that bothers a lot of women is that their foundation ends up looking cakey and patchy no matter what. So what exactly is the reason behind it? In this article, I am going to share with the most common foundation mistakes that you make which makes your foundation look patchy.
1. You don’t follow a skincare routine- Trust me on this, even if you end up using the most expensive foundation still it will look cakey if you don’t take care of your skin properly. If you don’t follow a regular skin care routine or don’t have a skincare routine at all your foundation will end up looking cakey. The basic routine that you must follow is the CTM or the cleansing, toning and moisturizing routine that everyone must follow despite their age and skin type. Along with this, another step that I would like you to add to your skincare routine is scrubbing. Scrubbing your face regularly will keep your skin smooth by taking off all the accumulated dead skin cells and a smooth canvas is all you need in order to get a smooth foundation application.

2. Using wrong skin care- Another important factor is to choose the right type of skin care in order to get the maximum out of your skincare routine. Always pay special attention while purchasing skincare as you need to get those products which are meant for your skin type. Someone with oily skin will have a completely different skincare and skincare products as compared to someone with dry skin. So just keep that in mind and choose accordingly.

3. Doing makeup in a jiffy- If you push things too quickly your makeup is ought to look cakey. After you apply your moisturizer, wait for it to get absorbed and apply the foundation only 7-10 minutes later. If you apply the foundation immediately after applying the moisturizer the foundation will not stay on the face, instead, it will keep slipping and thus will end up looking cakey.

4. Not using a primer- A lot of people consider face primer as a step that they can give a pass to. But they don’t realize the fact that it is the primer that helps the foundation in staying on for longer on the face and also makes the foundation application so much smoother. A primer takes care of your open pores, redness, reduce the oiliness and also creates a barrier between the skin and the foundation so that the makeup doesn’t come in direct contact with skin. You can also use different primers for different parts of the skin to tackle varied skin issues.

5. Choosing the wrong foundation- Just like foundation, it is very important that you also pick a foundation which suits your skin type. Just because one foundation looks like a dream on your best friend doesn’t mean it will have the same effect on your skin too. Thus, it is always a better idea to pick a foundation according to your skin type. There are a huge variety of foundations available in the market, ranging from liquid to powder consistency and their finishing ranging from matte to dewy. You can easily get one that matches your skin’s need and your personal preference.
6. Applying powder on the wet foundation- Once you have applied the foundation the next step is to let the foundation dry completely before you go ahead and do the rest of your makeup. If you start with the rest of your makeup immediately the foundation will not get the required time to set and will start to move and will start looking patchy and cakey. Just wait 5 minutes after applying your foundation and then proceed with the other steps in order make your foundation look even.
7. Flawed application- This may include anything from using the wrong brush to using the wrong application technique, from using too much foundation to using way too less. But this is not something which cannot be taken care of. Foundation application gets better as you practice. The best trick to get an even foundation application is to start by applying a thin layer of foundation and building up the coverage as you go. You can either use your fingers for this or you can also use a buffing brush for the same.
