8 Emotional Changes That Occur During Puberty

-

Going through puberty is a tricky thing. As if the adolescence is trying to play games on you. But don’t worry, it isn’t something which is happening exclusively to anyone in particular. Every adult goes through this phase once in his/her life. And if you deal it suitably, it just passes on like ‘just another phase’ of life. Here are few emotional changes that one might experience during the puberty.

1. Feeling overly sensitive
As you must have already read in your textbooks that when puberty strikes, you go through many bodily changes. And it is perfectly alright to feel conscious about them. It is totally okay being overly sensitive about your physical appearance. You might lose your temper easily and feel depressed. You can talk about these behavioural changes to your elders or someone you’re comfortable talking to.

2. Looking for an identity
Puberty is the phase of transition. You’re no more a kid but you’re not an adult either. You are somewhere in between. So you might be inclined to know who you really are and what you’re good at. Your friends are going through the same phase as you. You might also find yourself struggling to find your identity. But be patient, as the answers will come seeking you when the time will come.

3. Feeling uncertain
So you’re not a child anymore, but not an adult yet. So it can lead to mental conflicts often. But don’t lose your cool. Don’t find it to be an alien feeling. Everybody in your age feels the same. You might begin to wonder about new things like career, livelihood and relationships. All these new and unfamiliar things can make you feel uncertain about your future. But don’t be scared, my friend! There’s still a lot of time to think about all these. Once you come out of this phase, things will start falling in place itself.

4. Peer pressure
This is something which is inevitable when you hit this age. You will start discussing more elaborate things with your friends. You might seek advice from your friends who themselves are not sure how to handle things. You can be easily influenced by what media and the culture around you tell you about things. You might often dress up according to what people think about you and do things which other people want you to do.

These things might probably change your choices in life. This shouldn’t be happening, but no matter how you try, this happens. But before taking decisions in your life, take your parents into confidence. Remember, they are your ‘Real’ friends!

5. Conflicting thoughts
There can contradictory thoughts in your mind. You might be wanting to be independent while seeking support for some things at the same time. You might give up the career of your interest in order to be with your friends. You might jump into the things which you really don’t like just for the sake of staying with your friends. As a result, you might have conflicts with yourself and you start looking for clarity.

6. Mood swings
To add more to your conflicting thoughts and the bodily changes, you might also go through frequent and abrupt mood changes. There will be times when you’ll feel like going out with your friends while the other times you like to sit alone in your room with no one to disturb you. Although these transitions happen for a short span of time. These frequent changes in the temperament are known as mood swings. They usually occur due to hormonal changes that occur during the puberty.

7. Feeling conscious about self
The effects of puberty vary from person to person. So when you find that you’re growing differently from your friends, no need to feel conscious. These changes are more prominent in females as they develop faster than the boys. Changes which happen in females are more visible than that of boys. This can make you more conscious about yourself.

8. Getting sexual feelings

This is the phase when your body develops sexually. You are finally attaining your sexual maturity. It is the change when your body prepares itself to start having children. During this phase, you might feel curious about sex and also about the bodies of the people you find attractive. It is completely normal for you to be attracted to boys. Don’t feel ashamed when you feel attracted to a person of opposite sex. It’s just your hormones playing games with you.

You may also feel excited by normal things in life like reading romantic novels or watching a love-making scene on television.

There is nothing to feel guilty about. Your mind must be having several questions about sex. And you can ask them to someone you think can answer your question (usually your parents).
