Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Women

Technically speaking, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition in which a person is bothered by disturbing and upsetting thoughts or better call them obsessions and goes through the burden of carrying out recurring behaviours or compulsions. The Neuroscientists believe that the pathways that are involved in judgment, body movement and planning get corrupted in case of OCD. Moreover, the Environmental factors like relationships, stress or other family matters also affect this disorder.

It becomes very normal to cross check the gas stove is turned off, the iron is unplugged, the car or doors of the house are locked when a person suffers from this problem, repeated enchanting of prayers or certain words, repeated bathing or washing, eating items of food in a precise order or not shaking hands.

This disorder is commonly seen in women and some very common obsessions that they go through are:

  •  Fear of infectivity: It is the constant feeling of worrying about the having dirty hands or wearing dirty clothes. It also involves the fear of catching germs or infections from some other person.

  •  Fear of becoming a victim: The women suffering from OCD usually fear about becoming a victim of the some kind of tragedy or violence.
  •  Fear of committing violence: The fear of losing control over the self and doing some harm to the other person. For instance the fear of a mother harming her own child.
  •  Fear of Unethical Behaviour: It is again the fear of losing temper and doing something unethical. For example fear of a teacher taking off clothes in the class.

  •  Fear of asymmetry or disorder: The irresistible anxiety of everything to be arranged in good order. For example the fear of proper alignment of the food plates, clothes or books.

Many times, this disorder becomes so dominating that it not only affects the personal life of a person but also interrupts the wellbeing. So it becomes very important to have a proper diagnostics and eventually an effective treatment for this ailment. But it is not at all a problem that can- not be cured. It can be controlled very easily by following a positive attitude and some following routines:

Most of the treatments of this problem involve psychotherapy and meditations. Though there is a certain limit of medication too that one has to go through.

  •  Family Support: This indeed is very important for a person to recover from this ailment. The understanding, support, and motivation from the family would help in overcoming this problem.
  •  Refocus: It is very easy to get distracted in OCD and that is the reason that you need to focus your attention of something else whenever some disturbing thought clicks your mind. There are various ways in which you can refocus your attention and those are: reading books, listening to music, jogging, playing games or a refreshing walk.

  •  Anticipate the urges: You can anticipate the urges of your OCD before they arise and try to get things done at the first place itself. For instance, if you cross check the windows, doors or gas stove then make sure that they are turned off with attentively at the first as well so that there is no room for doubt.
